Prior to joining the Behavioral Health Counseling faculty in 2011, Dr. Carey was a full-time faculty member for 10 years in Drexel‘s Department of Psychiatry, Division of Behavioral Healthcare Education.

She has over 20 years of experience in behavioral health program planning and management, continuing education training, and policy development. Dr. Carey is a Commissioner for the United Stated Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certification Commission (USPRA), a member of the International Committee for Psychiatric Rehabilitation Inclusion, and is the current Chair of the PRA Test Oversight Committee. She has worked as a consultant to Pennsylvania’s Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse implementing PR services in Pennsylvania. As a USPRA approved provider, Dr. Carey is a high-quality continuing education trainer delivering workshops and trainings both nationally and internationally. Most recently, Dr. Carey presented at the World Health Organization Psychosocial Rehabilitation Conference in Milan, Italy and assisted in implementing The Recovery House program in Karachi, Pakistan.

As a frequent guest lecturer and workshop presenter, Dr. Carey has presented on psychiatric rehabilitation, evidence-based best practices, recovery-oriented services, treatment planning, behavioral health care system practices, program planning, and implementation courses. Dr. Carey held the post of the chief presenter of the Orientation to Psychiatric Rehabilitation Principles and Practices the PA OMHSAS mandated training for psychiatric rehabilitation program licensure. Workshop topics in psychiatric rehabilitation presented by Dr. Carey also include: Choosing Rehabilitation Goals, Curriculum-based Teaching, Putting the Core Values and Principles into Practice; Transforming Skills into Valued Roles; Overview of Recovery Documentation; and Planning/Leading Psychiatric Rehabilitation Groups. Her articles on direct-care staff development in community-based treatment settings have been published in the “Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal”; “Psychiatric Services”; and “PSYR Connections”.
